Frederic Bartholdi, the French artist who later created the Statue of Liberty, built this fountain for the 100th anniversary celebration of the Declaration of Independence, in 1876 in Philadelphia. The Fountain of Light and Water, as it's officially called, was moved to the nation's capital in 1878 and has been at its present location, on Independence Avenue across the street from the U.S. Botanic Garden, since the 1930s. It was one of the first monuments in the capital to be lit at night, first with gas lamps, then electric globes.
